One thing our tour guide said on our walking tour that has really stuck with me is that this city is a facade. A lot of the buildings we are seeing are replicas of the ones that stood here before WWII.
But looking at the buildings you would never know. We learned that the black aging that we see all around us is from the sandstone oxidizing. But the newer statues aren't doing it because they got a protectant sealant on them.
This idea really got me thinking about the way we view what is old and what is new; and how much effort we put into making old things new, and new things old.
