Flora and Fauna in Prague

Post written by Emilie Rummer

A couple of us went to the zoo and botanical gardens today. The zoo was massive, and it’s rated one of the best zoos in the world. There were unique exhibits and animals we’d never seen before, like the Eastern Bongo, which kind of looks like a brown cow with white stripes. Along with the unique and unusual animals, there were some that are more common by Tech, including deer and wolves. It was interesting watching people react to animals that seem so commonplace to us.

One thing I thought was really cool was the mountain goat exhibit. They were on an actual mountain, and we were mesmerized by their ability to climb up and down the steep cliffs, even the babies. I think they were able to have a more natural environment than many other zoos because the Prague Zoo is on a steep hill, making mountains more achievable.

After the zoo we went to the botanical gardens. There were different sections separated by environment, including a desert, pine forest, and peat bog. The desert area had petrified wood samples from Arizona to recreate a damaged Czech petrified forest. When we walked through the pine forest it reminded us of Houghton.

There was also a rosarium with some very colorful roses. They were beautiful but it was hard not to compare them to the Volksgarten in Vienna.

The zoo and the garden are close enough together than they can both be done in one day, and I would highly recommend both of them.
